Taita Taveta University Master Plan
Taita Taveta University College was established by the Kenya Government through The Taita Taveta University College Order, Legal Notice No. 156 of 18th October 2011 as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology - formerly the JKUAT Taita Taveta Campus.
The Taita-Taveta College is located near Voi in Ronge Location of Taita-Taveta District in the Coast Province. It was initially constructed as a Teacher Training College, but was given to JKUAT by the Government to serve as one of its Campuses. The beautiful College is sitting on 200 acres of land on a Hill Overlooking Voi Town, in a serene Environment away from the hassle and bustles of cities and towns and has a conducive environment for scholarship. The campus was officially handed over to JKUAT on 5th September 2007 and started operating in May 2009 initially offering certificate in bridging course in Mathematics. Degree level students reported officially to the campus on 21st October 2008 and the campus was officially opened on 21st November 2008. In November 2014 the university college initiated developed of its master plan that has been realized through participatory approach of all its stakeholders.
This is a 50 year master plan running from 2015 to 2075 and covering Main Campus. The Master Plan intends to accommodate minimum of 51685 students and 8181 staff members respectively. The master plan realized 407,943.00m2 of space exclusive of the existing space of 10,898.00m2 and ongoing projects. Out of which 167,543.41m2 is tuition space. This proposal will cost Ksh. 41,165,691,307.20 or US$ 451,238,171.79 to implement. This cost includes all building works, external works, equipment, consultancies, and all taxes associated with such development. 416 parking spaces have been planned for.
The Main Campus shall host the Main administration Building and remain the Headquarters of TTUC besides hosting the Schools of: Institute of Mines & Geology, Institute of Petroleum Engineering, Institutes and Research Centers, Institute of Human rights, School of Agriculture, Earth and Environmental Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, School of Business, School of Civil, Construction and Geomatic Engineering, (SCCGE), School of Computing and Informatics, School of Economics, School of Electrical, Telecommunication and Instrumentation Engineering, (SETIE), School of Health, School of Law, School of Mathematics, School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, (SMME), School of Media Studies, School of Physical Sciences, School of Education and School of Social Sciences. Main Campus will also host the Board of Postgraduate Studies, Directorate for Accommodation and Catering Services, Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), AIDS Control Unit, Directorate for Quality Assurance and Performance Contracting, Centre for E-Learning, and Directorate for Sports.
The campus has been planned as pedestrianized neighbourhoods with vehicular activities at the periphery and pedestrian covered walkways connecting the internal and external spaces within the precincts. The campus embraces sustainability design principles and adapts planning principles, such as, pedestrianization of the Campus, keeping common activities central and easily reachable, keeping vehicular activities to the periphery by locating the road and parking along the boundary of the plot and allowing no through road within the development, keeping most building facing North-South, create an integrated and interconnected settlement, keeping specialized activities further away from the central core, creating clarity in circulation, ensuring that core buildings , such as, Hostels, Lecture spaces, and Library create continuous human traffic that promotes safety on campus, and covering main pedestrian routes.
The student population of TTUC can grow to a maximum of 51685 if the other supporting facilities are enhanced. For instance for this growth of student numbers to be realized, the community should be encouraged to develop hostels within and adjacent to these campus that will accommodate the students, water supply should be increased, and other environmental issues should be addressed. 2,788,783.13 litres of water will be required per day. The University has enough land to develop enough student hostels.
