University of Eldoret Master Plan

The University of Eldoret (UoE) is a leading centre for quality education in Agriculture, Natural Resources Management, training, research and consultancy in Kenya. The University was founded in 1946 by the white settlers as a Large Scale Farmers Training Centre. In 1984, it was converted to a teachers’ training college and renamed Moi Teachers’ Training College to offer Diploma Science Teachers Training. Due to the double intake crisis, the College was taken over by Moi University in 1990 as a Campus and renamed it Chepkoilel Campus offering natural, basic and applied science programmes.

In August 2010, through Legal Notice No. 125 of 13 August 2010 the Campus was upgraded into a University College with the name Chepkoilel University College, a Constituent College of Moi University. Upon the award of Charter by the President on 11th February, 2013, the University College was renamed University of Eldoret.

The University is located 9km from Eldoret Town along the Eldoret–Ziwa Road  at  an  Altitude of 2154m above sea Level and is located at a latitude of 34’ 55’’, a Longitude of 0350 18’ 19”. The campus is both residential and non-residential.  It is located on a 1057-acre piece of land and has the necessary facilities for education and training. Towards the end of 2017 the university initiated development of its 3-D Master Plan through participatory approach of all its stakeholders.

This is a 53 year master plan running from 2018 to 2075 and covering Main Campus. The Master Plan intends to accommodate minimum of 44,510 students and 6,806 staff members respectively. Staff is broken down to academic staff of 4151 and technical and support staff of 2655. The master plan planned for 455,243.5 m2of plinth area inclusive of the existing space of 23,102 m2. This proposal will cost Ksh. 45,938,807,818.12 or US$ 450,380,468.81 to implement. This cost includes all building works, external works, equipment, consultancies, and all taxes associated with such development. 375 parking spaces have been planned for.

The Main Campus shall host the Main administration Building and remain the Headquarters of UoE besides hosting the School of Science, School of Economics, School of Business and Management Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Education, School of Agriculture and Biotechnology, School of Natural Resources Management, School of Environmental Studies, School of Human Resource Development, School of Medicine, School of Law and other support facilities. Main Campus will also host the Graduate School, University Referral Hospital, Directorate for Accommodation and Catering Services, Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Directorate for Quality Assurance and Performance Contracting, and Directorate for Sports.

The campus has been planned as pedestrianized neighbourhoods with vehicular activities at the periphery and pedestrian walkways connecting the internal and external spaces within the precincts. The campus embraces sustainability design principles and adapts planning principles, such as, pedestrianization of the Campus, keeping common activities central and easily reachable, keeping vehicular activities to the periphery by locating the road and parking along the boundary of the plot and main secondary roads and allowing no through road within the development, keeping most building facing NW-SE, create an integrated and interconnected settlement, keeping specialized activities further away from the central core, creating clarity in circulation, ensuring that core buildings , such as, Hostels, Lecture spaces, and Library create continuous human traffic that promotes safety on campus,  and covering main pedestrian routes.
